Method statements are a written list of procedures, which need to be carried out in a specified sequence in order to undertake a work activity safely. To summarise, they will use the results of a risk assessment and produce a written and safe system of work for carrying out the job. This is a requirement by Law for all companies with 5 or more employees.
Most method statements will correlate directly to the content of the accompanying risk assessment for the same job in order for the operatives to be able to assess which hazards have been considered and how any risk of potential accidents have been overcome.
If an accident does occur, it is, very often, the case that either the risk assessment and safe system of work was not suitable or sufficient or that the employee was not adhering to or suitably aware of its contents.
It is of paramount importance for any employers’ protection, that the statements are written accurately and that they correctly convey how the task is completed.
